I moved to Taiwan during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantined for 14 days before entering society. During a time of immense turmoil and conflict, my two weeks of isolation gave way to a meditation inspired by 騶虞 (zouyu), a Chinese mythological tiger-like creature. Often overshadowed by its more famous counterparts, like the dragon, this reinterpretation reimagines how mythologies are entangled and can live within one another.
Watercolors, blended with chalky pigment, vividly dyed the cloth. The colors set as I set my intentions before embarking on my journey of reconnecting with family in Taiwan, guided by 騶虞's (zouyu’s) ability to seek peaceful resolutions.
