After navigating the social welfare system to find a way out for a high school student who was living with her abuser, we resigned ourselves to the fact that nothing could be done since she was no longer a minor. I was enraged by how our systems, set up to protect vulnerable individuals, end up failing us and perpetuating harm.
All forms of injustice are unacceptable and the responsibilities should not fall onto the individual when they are in danger. Rather, they should not find themselves in unsafe situations to begin with. Systems of power need to provide support to those in need and be accountable for their actions and also their inactions.
